Strong weekend lifts Unzicker to the top of MARS point standings
Ryan Unzicker’s pursuit of the MARS Late Model Championship Series title continued over the weekend with a two-day stop at LaSalle Speedway.
Friday’s program featured a unique format with twin preliminary features. Unzicker secured a spot in the first feature with a fourth-place finish in his heat race. With $5,000 on the line, he advanced four positions to finish as runner-up. In the second feature, which utilized an invert for the starting grid, Unzicker began 12th and charged forward once again, gaining seven spots to finish fifth.
On Saturday, Unzicker returned for the Illinois Valley Showdown and locked into the $25,000-to-win main event with a convincing heat race victory. Rolling off from the third starting spot, he gained one position over the course of the 75-lap finale to register a strong second-place finish. He joined winner Bobby Pierce and third-place finisher Brandon Sheppard on the podium.
Thanks to his consistent performance throughout the weekend, Unzicker now holds a narrow one-point lead over Jason Feger in the latest MARS championship standings.
